The temperature curve on Mur Island shows: Yes, temperatures on Earth have been much higher and also much lower since its formation.

BUT: Since we humans have evolved - that is, for about the last 120,000 years - they have never been as high as they are now. AND: The carbon dioxide content of the atmosphere has never been so high during this period (temperature lags behind CO2 content). But this period is crucial for us. If we want living conditions to remain favorable for our species, we must act quickly and decisively now, i.e., first and foremost minimize CO2 and methane emissions, which means no longer emitting CO2 and methane as soon as possible.

We have to admit to ourselves: We can only do this by cutting out. We have to consume less energy and resources (reduction by half, remaining energy through renewables, circular economy). Everyone can reduce about 50% of their own CO2 emissions - the other half must be provided by politics through appropriate framework conditions for the economy.

What can we personally do away with most quickly, namely in a way that also promotes our own physical and mental well-being?

  • Drive less often and slower instead try biking and walking (in combination with public transport)
  • Eat less often and less meat/animal food instead of seasonal/regional vegetables, grains, fruits.
  • Reduce consumption: less new, long-lasting, more used, short distances. Regional, use instead of own, share - this saves energy and resources in production and transport.

Those who live this way know the valuable other side of the coin of sufficiency: time for essentials and an active, conscious life in harmony with oneself and the environment ("Sufficiency: effectiveness of individually and responsibly chosen orientations in resource consumption patterns or consumption patterns.", Wikipedia).

As is well known, the topics of climate change and sustainability are complex and questions as well as answers have to be considered systemically. Even on the generous space available for the banners on the Murinsel, no comprehensive statements can be made. (At this point, thanks to City of Design and the City of Graz for making the project possible!). So the severe simplification of graphics, texts and illustrations leaves me unsatisfied, which is why this site exists.

I will add and make available as much valuable content as possible on this website during the course of the exhibition from the end of June to the end of September 2023. Starting with links (e.g. to the excellent videos of Harald Lesch) to further literature and descriptive graphics on relevant topics on different scales - from individual behavior to transformations on European or global level and scientific recommendations (e.g. transport, energy transition, sustainable lifestyle, EU Green Deal).

I look forward to constructive additions and suggestions!
